A Summer Story Finally Available in English

Set during an endless summer vacation, HimaNatsu: Of Churches Sunflowers and Long Summers follows the Oboshiro Choir Squad through a story filled with promises, old memories, redemption, and moments that can get surprisingly painful.

One of the biggest reasons this release stands out is its place in Makura’s history. HimaNatsu is the first Makura title to receive an official English translation, unless ATRI is counted. That game was developed as a collaboration between Makura, Frontwing, and ANIPLEX.EXE, so HimaNatsu still feels like a particularly important release for fans of the studio.

HimaNatsu: Of Churches Sunflowers and Long Summers also has some notable connections to SCA-DI, the creator associated with Subarashiki Hibi and Sakura no Uta. While HimaNatsu is not a solo SCA-DI project, his involvement was far from minor. He worked as a producer, wrote the Yomi route, created the plots for both Yomi and Hina, and contributed to the common route. That influence is easy to notice once the story gets going.

More Than Just a Comfortable Moege

It would be easy to look at HimaNatsu and assume it is simply going to be a light, character-focused summer visual novel. That impression does not really hold up, especially once some of the individual routes get underway.

Memories, Time, and an Endless Summer

At its core, HimaNatsu is about summer, memories, time, and the people who eventually get left behind. HimaNatsu: Of Churches Sunflowers and Long Summers touches on ideas surrounding death, memory, the passage of time, and the difficulty of moving forward, but it does not try to turn those subjects into one giant philosophical argument.

Instead, those ideas give the characters and their surroundings more emotional weight. The philosophy is there, but the emotional side of the story remains the priority.

That approach works especially well because of the setting. Oboshiro feels like an actual place rather than a generic backdrop. The countryside, church, local legends, and seemingly endless summer days all come together to create a strong nostalgic mood.

The writing also becomes noticeably more literary during the heavier parts of the story. Flowers, memories, and the passing of time return as recurring images, giving certain scenes a sense of cohesion without making the story feel like a philosophy lecture.

Features of HimaNatsu: Of Churches Sunflowers and Long Summers:

  • Ruka’s route is a good example. It brings in plenty of suspense and drama, and the tension sticks around rather than being resolved after a quick emotional scene. At the same time, HimaNatsu: Of Churches Sunflowers and Long Summers still knows how to slow things down with plenty of relaxed and comfortable moments, so it never becomes relentlessly heavy.
  • There is also some interesting talent behind the individual routes. Hina’s route was written by members of the team behind ATRI, while Ruka’s route comes from the creators of H2O: Footprints in the Sand. For anyone already familiar with those works, those routes are worth paying attention to.
  • Still, Yomi and Hina arguably make up the heart of HimaNatsu, so skipping them would mean missing a major part of what HimaNatsu: Of Churches Sunflowers and Long Summers is trying to do.
