The story follows a young boy who forms an unexpected bond with Trico, a massive, mythical creature. Together, they explore the remains of an ancient civilization and search for a way out of its dangerous ruins.
The relationship between the two characters is the heart of the experience. Rather than relying entirely on combat, The Last Guardian focuses on exploration, environmental puzzles, and cooperation. Trico’s unpredictable behavior adds a personal touch to the adventure, making the creature feel more like a living companion than a typical in-game partner.
Gameplay: Solving Puzzles With Trico
Like Ico (2001) and Shadow of the Colossus (2005), The Last Guardian uses a third-person perspective and blends puzzle-solving with action and exploration. Players control an unnamed boy who must work alongside Trico to overcome obstacles and reach new areas.
Trico’s name, written as トリコ in Japanese, has several possible meanings. It can refer to a prisoner (虜, toriko), a baby bird (鳥の子, tori no ko), or a combination of the Japanese words for bird (鳥, tori) and cat (猫, neko).
The boy can climb walls and structures, pick up objects such as barrels, and activate mechanisms with levers. Trico, meanwhile, can jump across large gaps, reach elevated platforms, and fend off guards trying to capture the boy. Each character has abilities the other lacks, so progress often depends on finding ways to use them together.
Not every obstacle can be handled by Trico alone. Certain gates block its path, while glass eyes frighten the creature and prevent it from moving forward. The boy must find ways around these barriers. He also needs to collect barrels to feed Trico, remove spears lodged in its body after enemy encounters, and gently pet it to help it calm down.
Story: An Unlikely Friendship in the Nest
The adventure begins when a boy, voiced by Tatsuki Ishikawa, wakes up inside a ruined castle in a deep valley known as the Nest. Nearby, he discovers Trico, an enormous creature held in chains and covered in wounds.
Trico initially reacts with hostility, making it difficult for the boy to approach. However, removing the spears from its body and providing food gradually changes the creature’s attitude. Once the boy frees Trico from its chains, the two begin exploring the surrounding ruins together.
During their journey, they discover a shield-like object that releases electrical energy from Trico’s tail. This strange ability becomes an important part of their efforts to move through the castle and overcome its many obstacles.

Features of The Last Guardian:
- Sony first revealed The Last Guardian at E3 2009, announcing a planned 2011 release for the PlayStation 3. However, development faced repeated delays.
- Ueda and several other members of Team Ico eventually left Sony and established GenDesign. Technical challenges also contributed to the decision to move the project to the PlayStation 4 in 2012, leading some to question whether The Last Guardian would ever be released.
- Despite these setbacks, development continued. Ueda and GenDesign remained involved as creative consultants, with Ueda retaining his director role while Sony’s Japan Studio handled the technical side of production. The Last Guardian returned to the spotlight at E3 2015 before finally launching in 2016.
- Following its release, The Last Guardian received praise for its art direction, storytelling, and convincing portrayal of Trico. Some criticism focused on the gameplay, particularly the challenges of getting the creature to respond as expected. Even so, the bond between the boy and his unusual companion remains one of the game’s most memorable features.
