A Dark Revenge Story in Birmingham

Birmingham, 1939. Elisa’s husband has been murdered, and the people responsible are about to pay for it.

Cohen 1939 follows Elisa as she hunts down those behind her husband Richard’s death. Its setting has a strong Peaky Blinders-style gangster feel, while the combat immediately brings Hotline Miami to mind. Rain-covered streets, smoky hideouts, sharp suits, and violent encounters create a grim backdrop for Elisa’s revenge.

Rather than throwing players straight into every fight, Cohen 1939 gives plenty of room for tactical approaches. Enemies can be drawn away with noise, attacked from behind, or caught off guard from an unexpected angle. Picking the right place and moment to start a fight can make all the difference.

Fast Combat and Constant Movement

Combat is built around speed and timing. Enemies can go down quickly, but Elisa can suffer the same fate if an attack is mistimed. Watching enemy positions, waiting for an opening, and acting before opponents have time to react are all part of staying alive.

Running out of ammunition does not necessarily mean the fight is over. An empty gun can be thrown to stun an enemy, giving enough time to grab another weapon and continue the attack. Gunfire, melee strikes, and weapon throws can be combined to turn situations that look hopeless into winning opportunities.

There are also four playable characters, each bringing different abilities to the action. Depending on the character, players can make use of techniques such as sliding while firing, concentrated gunfire, summoned ravens, or powerful rage-based attacks.

More Than a Hotline Miami-Like

The comparison with Hotline Miami is hard to avoid, especially with the 2D top-down perspective and lethal shooting mechanics. Cohen 1939, however, puts considerably more emphasis on its story, cutscenes, character presentation, and artwork.

Lady Cohen is the main character for much of the experience, and she is far from helpless when the shooting starts. She can handle herself with a firearm and, when the ammunition runs dry, switch to brutal close-range attacks with a baseball bat.

Cohen 1939 also includes RPG-style progression and training, along with weapon unlocks. One of the more unusual mechanics is Elisa’s supernatural raven, which can be sent ahead to scout an area before making a move.
