As the tenth entry in the God of War franchise, it takes the series back to Greek mythology and explores events that happened before the rest of the games. Its story unfolds before God of War: Ascension (2013) and the flashback events shown in God of War: Ghost of Sparta (2010), making it the earliest chapter in the series’ timeline.

God of War Sons of Sparta also marks a return to Greek mythology after the two Norse-inspired adventures, God of War (2018) and God of War Ragnarök (2022). With a coming-of-age story built around loyalty, honor, duty, and brotherhood, the adventure offers a different look at Kratos before the tragedies that shaped his life.

A Journey Across Sparta With Deimos

The story follows a younger Kratos during his training at the Agoge, the demanding Spartan institution where he trains alongside his younger brother, Deimos. When the brothers discover that one of their fellow trainees has disappeared, they set out across Laconia to track down their missing friend. 

As the journey unfolds, the brothers must overcome dangerous enemies and work together, giving their relationship more room to develop. The narrative is framed as a story told by an adult Kratos to his daughter, Calliope. At this point in his life, he serves as a captain in the Spartan Army, and his account offers a glimpse into his past before the tragic events later explored through flashbacks in the original God of War (2005).

Combat, Exploration, and Classic 2D Gameplay

God of War Sons of Sparta is the second game in the franchise to use a two-dimensional action-platforming format, following God of War: Betrayal (2007). However, the two games approach the genre differently. While Betrayal is a 2D side-scroller, Sons of Sparta uses a Metroidvania structure that encourages players to explore interconnected areas, solve puzzles, overcome platforming challenges, and unlock new ways to progress.

Since the adventure takes place long before Kratos acquires his famous Blades of Chaos, his fighting style relies on more traditional Spartan equipment. His main weapons are the Dory spear and Aspis shield, which provide a different feel from the chained blades featured in later entries.

Players can also obtain Gifts of Olympus, special items that unlock magical powers and additional attacks. These abilities are more than just combat tools; some are needed to reach new areas and advance through God of War Sons of Sparta. The Victory Sandals, for example, improve Kratos’s movement by boosting his speed and jumping ability.

The enemy roster combines familiar faces from the Greek-era games with some less common mythological creatures. Players encounter undead soldiers, harpies, minotaurs, gorgons, cyclopes, wraiths, sirens, and satyrs.
