What the fish?!

Gawr Gura: Quest for Bread is an action-platformer fan game where Gura jumps, spins, fights, and parkours through mysterious lands on a ridiculous mission: finding her lost bread. Yes. The bread must be saved.

There are tons of inside jokes and callbacks to past Hololive streams, but here’s the thing: absolutely no knowledge of the streamers is required to have a good time.

For non-Hololive fans, this is a short, sweet action-platformer packed with goofy humor. The world design is visually simple, sure, but the levels are short and varied enough to keep things moving, while the platforming and combat have some surprisingly fun techniques to mess around with, including a few tricks Gawr Gura: Quest for Bread doesn’t directly tell you about. That’s where the fun kicks in.

And for Holofans? Same great action-platformer, except now there are plenty of fun Holo references and a simple, wonderfully silly story sitting underneath it all.

The combat is especially nice.

Simple at first.

But there’s more going on.

The basic combat system is easy to understand, yet advanced players can still squeeze more out of it with things like animation cancelling and different combo variations, which makes experimenting with the mechanics surprisingly satisfying, especially during the final boss fight.

The no-hit achievement was another story, though. Before the restart feature was added, going for that achievement against the final boss could get way more frustrating than necessary, because the camera can rotate wildly whenever the boss starts moving at high speed, and that could result in accidentally landing straight onto one of those expanding AOE attacks. Brutal. Absolutely brutal.

That’s really the only major gripe with Gawr Gura: Quest for Bread. If the no-hit achievement isn’t the goal, the final boss is fantastic, and honestly, it’s the most entertaining boss fight in Gawr Gura: Quest for Bread. The other bosses are fun too, with enough variety between them and a reasonable increase in difficulty that makes the progression toward the final fight feel pretty natural.

Then there’s the platforming.

It’s good.

Really good.

The mechanics are straightforward, but they work so well that adding a bunch more systems honestly wouldn’t be necessary. The parkour can be frustrating at first, especially when things get hectic, but once the brain switches on and the focus locks in, it becomes surprisingly easy to pull off.

And the game isn’t afraid to break the fourth wall, either. It does so constantly, but in a way that’s genuinely funny and enjoyable rather than just throwing references at the screen for the sake of it.

The boss fights are also a huge highlight. They’re weird, creative, and genuinely cool, with each encounter bringing something different to the table. The whole Gawr Gura: Quest for Bread knows exactly what it wants to be: a short, silly, surprisingly polished action-platformer with tight movement, satisfying combat, goofy humor, and enough hidden mechanical depth to keep the gameplay fun from start to finish.
