A Dark Take on Victorian London

The Order: 1886 takes place in an alternate version of London during the Victorian era, where steampunk technology and supernatural threats shape everyday life. Players follow the Knights of the Round Table as they defend humanity against dangerous half-breeds, including werewolf-like creatures and vampires, while also dealing with rebel groups determined to challenge the government.

The atmosphere is one of The Order: 1886’s strongest features. Its detailed environments, impressive visuals, and cinematic presentation bring this reimagined version of London to life. However, the experience is fairly short, and its limited replay value may leave players wanting more.

Gameplay and Combat Mechanics

Playing from a third-person perspective, The Order: 1886 puts players in control of Sir Galahad, a veteran member of the Order tasked with protecting the city. Most encounters revolve around taking cover, aiming carefully, and using a range of firearms to deal with incoming threats. The available arsenal includes pistols, rifles, crossbows, and grenades, giving players several ways to approach combat.

Gunfights aren’t the only way to handle enemies. Galahad can also perform close-range attacks and stealth takedowns when the situation calls for a quieter approach. Quick-time events appear throughout the campaign, requiring players to press specific buttons at the right moment to continue through certain scenes. The environments also contain collectibles that reveal additional details about the game’s world and history.

Progression follows a mostly linear structure, guiding players through carefully designed locations as the story unfolds. Although the combat offers some variety, the overall gameplay remains fairly straightforward, with limited opportunities to influence how events play out.

Story: A Mission That Goes Wrong

The story begins in the autumn of 1886, when London faces two growing dangers: attacks from half-breeds and an armed uprising against the government. After dealing with rebels in Mayfair, Sir Galahad, voiced by Steve West, follows the surviving insurgents into the Underground. There, he encounters Lycans, dangerous creatures resembling werewolves.

Galahad’s mentor, Sir Percival (Graham McTavish), suspects the rebels and the Lycan attacks are connected. As one of the Order’s most experienced knights, Percival wants to investigate the insurgents’ base in Whitechapel. The Lord Chancellor refuses his request, insisting that the Order should focus on its ongoing fight against the half-breeds rather than investigate the rebellion.

Overall, The Order: 1886 offers an appealing mix of supernatural action, Victorian atmosphere, and cinematic storytelling. Its cover-based combat is easy to pick up, and the alternate-history setting gives the adventure a distinctive identity. Still, the brief runtime and restricted gameplay of The Order: 1886 keep it from reaching its full potential. For players who enjoy story-driven action games and atmospheric worlds, it can be an enjoyable experience, even if it leaves room for more.

Features of The Order: 1886:

  • With quiet support from Sir Lucan (Matthew Waterson), the Order’s Knight Commander and the Lord Chancellor’s adopted son, Galahad and Percival proceed with the investigation.
  • Lady Igraine (Alice Coulthard) and the Marquis de Lafayette join them on the mission. Their search leads to the abandoned Royal London Hospital, where they discover that Lycans have taken over the rebel headquarters.
  • Inside, Galahad and Igraine uncover evidence of a plan to infiltrate the Agamemnon, the flagship of the United India Company’s airship fleet. The rebels intend to assassinate Lord Hastings, the company’s chairman and a regular guest of the Round Table. The team boards the airship and manages to stop the attack, but an explosion soon throws everything into chaos.
  • Most of the passengers, including Hastings, escape the airship. Galahad and Percival stay behind to search for the rebel leader, only for a second explosion to send the Agamemnon crashing into Hyde Park. The disaster also destroys the Crystal Palace. Galahad survives the crash, but the mission ends in tragedy when he discovers that Percival has died.
