Sir We Have an Orc Problem is an incremental-style tower defense game where you face an overwhelming number of orcs.

Sir We Have an Orc Problem PC (Final)

Greet them with even more bullets, bombs and lasers! Defend your base against an overwhelming number of orcs. They’re coming with tens of thousands of troops to overrun you. Greet them with even more bullets, bombs and lasers! The one singular thing that Orc Problem does that can’t exist within the browser space is the mass rendering of units on screen in Sir We Have an Orc Problem. There are times where THOUSANDS of units attack the lanes, all individually rendered with pathfinding and physical reactions to different attacks. And while this is pretty damn cool to see at first, especially when using the larger attacks that decimate thousands of orcs at once.

Once it becomes clear that they all flow in the same patterns over and over, and the camera naturally zooms out more as each level gets bigger, what was once a mass horde quickly becomes a giant green blob of liquid. The experience turns into fighting a river, with no distinct masses or currents, a watery form asking a simple yes or no of whether the tower placement and DPS are enough to win. There are no unique enemies or bosses worth caring about; the experience simply becomes hitting the play button and watching the river flow. In fact, the only variety the green river presents comes from upgrade tree variants that benefit the player.

Where the REAL problems start to shine is when the incremental parts of the gameplay step forward. Unlike ANY other game in the TD genre, Orc Problem designs itself around the philosophy that the player should “grind” missions in order to fill out the upgrade tree, which in turn completely—and COMPLETELY—kills any momentum or fun Sir We Have an Orc Problem tries to carry. Expect to click that play button and watch already placed turrets do the same thing over and over, because that’s far more of the experience than expected. It doesn’t help that, upon this realization, the first attempt at a level can be spent doing nothing but hitting play and watching.

The actual “strategy” of the experience is so damn weak because of this. Very rarely is there much thought involved in tower placement after the first or second attempt on a level. More thought is likely to go into optimizing how quickly the play-again button gets pressed than into anything actually happening on the battlefield after that first run. In Orc Problem, every new level can be approached expecting a loss, regardless of planning or strategy. That’s right—outpace what Sir We Have an Orc Problem considers the proper speed of completion, and the reward is a series of levels where the turrets simply can’t output enough damage. Time to grind!
