MediEvil is an action-adventure game developed by Other Ocean Emeryville and published by Sony Interactive Entertainment for the PlayStation 4.

Gameplay, Design, and Soundtrack
The game revisits the original MediEvil, which SCE Cambridge Studio, a British video game developer, created for the first PlayStation in 1998.

The story follows Sir Daniel Fortesque, a resurrected knight who travels through the kingdom of Gallowmere, battling enemies, collecting weapons, and meeting various characters along the way. This remake retains much of what made the original game memorable while updating its presentation for modern hardware. The result stays close to the classic adventure without simply copying every aspect of its original design.
The project was initially announced as a remaster in late 2017, but its status changed to a full remake in 2018. The development team used newer technology to improve the graphics, character models, and other visual details while preserving the atmosphere of the 1998 release. Several additional features were also introduced to expand the experience. Special editions included bonus content for players looking for something extra.
Gameplay and Combat
The adventure unfolds across multiple stages, which players can select from a map of Gallowmere. Each level brings new enemies, challenges, and opportunities to explore. Sir Daniel has access to a broad selection of weapons, including swords, clubs, bows, and throwing daggers. Some weapons can be charged before attacking to deliver a stronger blow, giving combat a little more variety.
Even without an equipped weapon, Dan can use his own arm to perform both close-range and ranged attacks. Shields provide another layer of defense, although they can absorb only a limited amount of damage and offer no protection against certain hazards, such as falling from great heights.
Combat requires players to keep an eye on Dan’s health. Enemy attacks gradually drain his health bar, and the game ends if it runs out completely. Unlike games that automatically restore health after each stage, MediEvil relies on Life Bottles to replenish Dan’s health when it has been fully depleted.
New Features and Character Design
Although the remake follows the original game’s structure and content quite closely, it introduces several additions that make the experience more convenient and engaging. One notable improvement is the ability to switch between primary and secondary weapons, a feature previously introduced in MediEvil 2. This makes changing combat strategies easier without interrupting the action too much.
The optional Dan Cam offers another way to experience the adventure, allowing players to switch to an over-the-shoulder camera perspective. The game also includes the Book of Gallowmere, an in-game collection of information about its characters and enemies. These additions provide more flexibility while helping players learn about the world they are exploring.

Features of MediEvil:
- The soundtrack brings back Andrew Barnabas and Paul Arnold, the composers responsible for the music in the previous three entries in the series. Their return helps maintain a familiar musical identity while allowing the remake to introduce fresh arrangements and new compositions.
- The Prague Symphony Orchestra performed the orchestral arrangements, adding greater depth to the game’s musical presentation. The soundtrack combines updated versions of music from MediEvil: Resurrection, orchestral interpretations of tracks from the 1998 original, and entirely new pieces written specifically for the remake.
- Optional Lost Souls missions add further challenges to the familiar level design. A ghost appears in each stage and assigns Dan a specific task to complete. Finishing every Lost Souls objective unlocks the original MediEvil from the main menu under the title Old Game. This bonus gives longtime fans an opportunity to return to the 1998 version and compare it with the remake.
