Build a Home in a Harsh World

The goal is not simply to fight your way through a dungeon. An entire settlement needs to be built and maintained in barren, isolated land before the expedition can safely venture deeper into the darkness.

The settlement acts as the foundation for every expedition. Rooms can be designed freely by placing walls and doors wherever needed. Bedrooms, dining areas, workshops, and other useful spaces can all be created to keep the community running. Fields provide crops, while forges equipped with anvils and smelters help produce useful gear. Resources have to be managed carefully, with food rations and camping supplies prepared for future trips. Research also unlocks additional buildings and equipment as the settlement develops.

Create the Right Expedition Team

Every character comes with six main abilities and talents, plus dozens of statistics covering both combat and everyday life. Their traits are influenced by their race, background, and personality, so recruits can feel quite different from one another. A curious Lizardman with a drifter’s past, for example, may bring a completely different set of strengths and weaknesses to the group.

Recruiting the right people matters. Characters can level up and improve over time, while better equipment can make them even more effective. A party can contain up to four members, making team composition an important part of the strategy. Skill combinations such as sword, mace, bow, and fire magic can be developed to create a group that works well together.

Tactical Combat Without Turns

Combat happens in real time, but Dungeon Settlers allows the action to be paused whenever a tactical decision needs more thought. There are no traditional turns or round limits, so battles feel more fluid while still giving plenty of room for careful planning.

Enemies have their own traits and attack patterns, and learning how they behave can make a huge difference. Different effects and abilities come into play during fights, including stun, bleed, burn, provoke, vulnerable, charge attacks, and summons. Positioning the party properly, targeting weaknesses, and using skills at the right moment can turn an apparently lost fight around.

Dungeon Settlers is built as a hardcore strategy experience, so mistakes can carry a serious cost. Once a character dies, there is no coming back. That makes every expedition feel a little more tense, especially when valuable characters and resources are on the line.

Explore a Different Dungeon Every Time

Dungeon expeditions are randomly generated, with rooms and floors changing between runs in Dungeon Settlers. Different regions can also introduce random environmental effects, keeping familiar strategies from always working the same way. Going deeper brings access to rarer and more valuable resources, but the dangers increase along with them.

Features of Dungeon Settlers:

  • The dungeon is filled with strange remnants of magical experiments.
  • Towering golems and acid-spitting creatures are among the threats waiting below, while useful materials such as wood logs, herbs, gemstone veins, and mysterious mandrake can be collected along the way.
  • There are also merchants to trade with and stranger encounters to discover. Ancient trees, for instance, may demand blood in exchange for their forbidden fruit. These encounters, combined with the changing dungeon layouts and increasingly dangerous enemies, give each expedition its own little surprises at Dungeon Settlers.
  • Overall, Dungeon Settlers has a nice mix of settlement building and tactical dungeon exploration. The colony side gives the adventure a sense of progression, while the unforgiving combat makes every trip underground feel meaningful.
