Humanica PC (Build 25191239)

Build a Settlement From the Ground Up

Starting in 10,000 B.C., with your settlement changing dramatically along the way.

The technology tree is a big part of the experience. New discoveries can alter how the settlement works and may push you to rethink your approach as conditions change. As progress continues, the village grows in both size and technological ability.

The world itself is procedurally generated, and the starting landscape can be selected at the beginning of a new game. That gives each settlement a slightly different setting to work with.

Daily Work, Farming, and Progress

Life for the settlers starts off fairly simple. Resources are limited during the early years, so keeping everyone fed and clothed is one of the first challenges to deal with. From there, the settlement gradually opens up more possibilities.

Settlers can construct buildings, gather materials, make different items, grow crops, raise animals, and eventually work with bronze and iron. Better tools also make a noticeable difference. Creating bronze and iron axes or pickaxes can speed up certain jobs, making higher-quality equipment worth producing.

Humanica uses a turn-based system built around individual days. Each day gives settlers a limited amount of time to complete their work, so planning their tasks and keeping them productive becomes important. It has that familiar “just one more turn” feeling where another day can easily turn into several.

Explore, Build, and Shape the Land

Exploration takes place on a hexagonal world map, with turns controlling movement and activity. Traveling across the map can uncover useful discoveries, including new crops to plant, animals to raise, and other resources that can help the settlement develop.

Construction uses an unusual grid made from irregular, randomly shaped quadrilaterals rather than a standard square layout. The surrounding terrain can also be changed. Mountains can be dug into or raised, giving more freedom when deciding how the settlement and its landscape should look.

There is also a system of laws and annual plans that lets each playthrough develop in a different direction. Available annual plans can appear randomly, adding a light roguelike element to the experience.

Humanica PC (Build 25191239)

Features of Humanica:

  • Protect the Settlement
  • Growth does not come without trouble. Wild animals and nomadic groups can threaten the settlement, so settlers need to be prepared to defend what has been built.
  • Weapons can be provided to the settlers, while walls and towers can be constructed around important areas. Keeping the settlement protected becomes another part of managing its long-term development.
  • Humanica is a one-person project made with a lot of care.
  • Its mix of settlement building, technology progression, exploration, terrain editing, and turn-based management gives Humanica plenty to keep an eye on as the settlement moves from basic tools toward more advanced technology.
