The Red Pearls Of Borneo takes place against the tense backdrop of December 16, 1941. Jeremiah Goodwill’s plantation was meant to be a peaceful retreat, but with the Japanese Imperial Navy approaching, everything quickly spiraled into disorder.
The investigation starts with only a few simple tools: a collection of old photographs, a map of the plantation, and the ability to reach into memories from the past. From there, the mystery slowly starts to take shape.
A Colonial Noir Investigation
Inspired by Return of the Obra Dinn, The Case of the Golden Idol, and Type Help, The Red Pearls Of Borneo blends detective work with supernatural elements. Instead of following a straightforward sequence of events, the investigation jumps between people and points in time, gradually revealing hidden meetings, personal motives, mistakes, and the events that led to the tragedy.
One of the most interesting parts is The Red Pearls Of Borneo’s node-based deduction system, known as the “Mind’s Eye.” It helps track where different guests were across the island and when they were there. Connecting these details can reveal contradictions and help establish who was in the right place at the right time.
The investigation also leaves plenty of room for note-taking. Characters, locations, objects, clue details, and snippets of text can all be recorded, which comes in handy as the number of details begins to pile up.
