A Very Strange Trip Through Space

Set in the year 12,012, everything changed after a world-ending bioweapon was unleashed on the masses. Now, the solar system has been wiped out by mysterious celestial forces, while a weapons program operated by GSSAI CO.’s Earth branch continues to move forward at an alarming pace.

Meanwhile, people across the world are simply vanishing.

And somehow, all of this starts with one man making a mistake during a game of pool.

RUBATO is an experimental 2D physics-based spin on the collect-a-thon genre, mixing strange ideas, playful exploration, and plenty of unexpected moments.

Explore, Lick Things, Collect Planet Bits

The game features open areas with a Metroidvania-style layout, giving plenty of room to poke around and find hidden paths. The main character’s tongue is also very much part of the adventure, as it can be used to lick enemies and objects along the way.

The goal is to collect Planet Bits, which are needed to help put the broken solar system back together.

There are five compact but densely packed areas to explore. Each one has its own odd personality, from a massive sprawling bakery to what might be the world’s worst-planned city. Looking around pays off, with secrets and shortcuts tucked into corners that are easy to miss.

A Weird Story That Gets Surprisingly Serious

RUBATO doesn’t take itself too seriously, at least not all the time. The story leans heavily into comedy, strange situations, and character-driven writing, but it isn’t afraid to suddenly shift gears.

Things get ridiculous. Then they get serious. Then, somehow, they become very serious.

The story’s tone can catch you off guard in a good way, especially when the humor gives way to something much more personal. Beneath all the bizarre events is a simple idea: saving the world starts with saving yourself.
