OpenFront is a real-time multiplayer strategy game built around territory, economics, alliances, and military power.

A Massive Battle on One Shared Map

Hundreds of players can end up fighting on the same map at once, and every match can quickly turn into a completely different war. More than 1 million people play the web version each month, with players regularly going from small beginnings to full-scale wars — including nuclear strikes.

The Steam release keeps the same core experience while adding faster launching, improved performance, Steam achievements, and several Steam-exclusive extras.

The best part is that the game doesn’t take long to understand. The strategy, however, goes quite a bit deeper.

Build an Empire or Get Overrun

Every game begins with control of a small piece of land surrounded by hundreds of other players. From there, the decisions are up to you. Expand into empty territory, put pressure on nearby countries, strengthen your economy, or prepare for the next player who decides to make a move.

Gold and military strength both matter. Expanding too quickly can leave borders exposed, while playing too cautiously gives neighbouring players plenty of time to grow.

OpenFront keeps the controls straightforward, but there is plenty to think about once a match gets moving.

Different maps also change how the game needs to be played. Europe’s narrow routes can make diplomacy and timing especially important, while Asia’s more open terrain gives expansion a different feel. The global map adds huge oceans to the equation, making control of the sea another major part of the strategy.

Clans, Competition, and Customisation

OpenFront isn’t only about individual players. There is an active community built around clans and competitive matches. Clan tags have a practical role in team games, too: players with the same tag can automatically be placed together, allowing organised groups to compete as proper teams.

Clan performance is tracked globally, including wins, losses, and win rates, with results appearing on leaderboards.

Competitive play has also grown around OpenFront Masters, the game’s official competitive organisation. It runs monthly tournaments with cash prizes, referees, and anti-cheat rules, along with a presence on Liquipedia. The OFM Discord has more than 10,000 members, while a dedicated spectator format makes competitive matches easier to watch and stream.

For players who care more about personal style, there are plenty of cosmetic options as well. Territory patterns change the appearance of the tiles under your control, ranging from simple designs to more playful meme-based skins. Hundreds of real-world flags are available, and profiles can be customised with cosmetics earned through playing or purchased through the in-game shop.

None of these items affect gameplay. OpenFront does not use cosmetics to create a pay-to-win advantage.

A Game Built With Its Community

OpenFront began as an open-source project, and player feedback remains a big part of its development. The public roadmap on GitHub shows what is currently being worked on and what is planned next. Community members can report bugs, suggest features, and even contribute code.
