Frontier: Path of Shadows shows that a war against the mysterious Utopia has finally ended. That doesn’t mean life has become any easier.

Welcome to the Frontier
It’s the 25th century, and new dangers are waiting beyond the edges of known space.
Welcome to the Frontier — a huge, barely explored region where fortune can change in a heartbeat. One day might bring a valuable discovery. The next could leave a crew trapped in a pirate’s hold. Plenty of people head out here looking for wealth, fame, or a fresh start. For the crew of the Simurgh, staying alive is already a good enough goal.
The Simurgh may be a battered old corvette, but its crew is far more capable than the ship looks.
Rob handles the flying and keeps the ship on course, including when landing goes badly. Alice practically lives in the engine room, constantly patching things up and making sure the Simurgh doesn’t fall apart. She’s also pretty handy when a computer system needs breaking into.
Then there’s Khan, who seems to know more than everyone else put together. There isn’t much questioning his plans when they keep getting the crew through dangerous situations.
Jay became part of the crew under stranger circumstances. A sentient crystal had been hunted across half the galaxy before somehow finding its way into Jay’s mind. What started as an ordinary life as a courier quickly turned into something much bigger.
Now there are plenty of questions that need answers. What exactly is the crystal? How can it communicate? And what is really going on across the Frontier while the rest of humanity chooses to ignore it?
A little help from outside the crew wouldn’t hurt.
Plan, Fight, and Adapt
The tactical combat takes inspiration from games such as X-COM and Final Fantasy, but it cuts down on the feeling that victory comes down to a random coin flip. Every decision can change how an encounter plays out, so rushing ahead without a plan can get expensive fast.
Procedurally generated maps also react to previous decisions, which helps keep encounters from feeling like the same battle repeated over and over. Each mission brings a new situation to deal with, and the choices made along the way can shape what comes next in Frontier: Path of Shadows.
The Frontier itself offers plenty to uncover. Travel to distant worlds that have barely, if ever, seen human visitors. Search for useful resources, collect credits, and open up new possibilities for the crew as the journey continues.
Keeping the squad properly equipped matters just as much at Frontier: Path of Shadows. Better armor and weapons can make a major difference, while worn-out equipment can become a serious problem at the worst possible moment. High-end technology isn’t easy to find in the Frontier, but a capable mercenary can usually make do with what’s available.

Features of Frontier: Path of Shadows:
- Choices Have Consequences
- Survival isn’t the only thing at stake. Jay simply wants to make it through alive. Johnson has bigger ambitions and wants to leave a name behind. As for the crystal symbiont, its intentions remain anyone’s guess.
- Who becomes an ally and who becomes an enemy is up to the choices made along the way. Explore the secrets buried throughout the Frontier, uncover what the crystal is really after, and decide how the story ultimately affects humanity.
- There is also a bigger history behind this universe. For 15 years, the world of Frontier: Path of Shadows has been developed alongside its players, with the community helping shape what it has become. Now there’s a chance to make a mark on that universe directly
