A Dark Fairy Tale Beneath the Kingdom

At the bottom of a forgotten well, deep inside the forest, something lives that may be powerful enough to bring down the queen. That creature is Glimmer, a tiny bird carrying nothing more than a matchstick and a very big task.

The main character sets out to burn the wicked queen and rescue his family after his siblings are taken by a crazed hunter.

The kingdom may be falling apart, but its residents still have plenty of personality. Ilda, a small mouse fleeing from the queen, can join Glimmer on a camping trip. There is also Looter, a strange scavenger who roams an abandoned castle in search of valuable things to steal. Along the way, Glimmer can track down his missing siblings and bring them safely back together.

Explore, Fight, and Find New Paths

The matchstick is more than just a weapon. Lighting it up helps Glimmer see through the darker parts of the world while also giving him an advantage during combat. As the journey continues, new abilities open up previously unreachable areas, encouraging plenty of backtracking across the large interconnected map.

Exploration also comes with plenty to uncover. Hidden secrets, environmental puzzles, strange characters, dangerous creatures, and 13 bosses are scattered throughout the rotten kingdom. Trinkets can be collected and combined to improve abilities, giving players some freedom to shape how Glimmer plays.

A More Relaxed Metroidvania Experience

While Well Dweller follows the familiar metroidvania formula, its difficulty sits at a different level from Silksong. That lighter approach works well with Well Dweller’s presentation, giving more room to appreciate the detailed areas created by the developer without removing the sense of exploration and progression.

The journey still offers plenty to do. New abilities make earlier locations worth revisiting, while puzzles, bosses, secrets, and hidden routes keep the map interesting as the adventure develops.

The achievement list is also fairly straightforward. Most achievements are tied to story progress or completion, rather than demanding long stretches of repetitive grinding. That makes it possible to work toward completion naturally while exploring the kingdom and following Glimmer’s journey.
