Although humans succeeded in developing special weapons that could deal an effective blow to the aliens, it was too late to revive their civilization. To this day, however, the Earth has yet to fall silent despite its abandoned cities, for swarm weapons known as “CogrinaUnits,” 12-meter-tall autonomous humanoid units, collect and operate the limited number of special weapons that remain, and continue to fight against the aliens, all for the sake of accomplishing the mission humanity entrusted them with….

If someone told you this was from the developer of *Citadel* and *Beyond Citadel*, you’d probably have just two questions: Why aren’t the robots more provocative, and why don’t defeated enemies explode into chunks of flesh that stay scattered across the floor? In other words, The Last Salvage Squad is a game you’ll likely enjoy a lot. The visual style is appealing, the gameplay feels intuitive, and the weapons are a blast to use—especially the sword and the assault rifle. The dual assault rifles are even better, and reloading them is incredibly satisfying.

Overall, The Last Salvage Squad is a great little game that’s well worth your attention. The story is on the shorter side, but the experience is fun from start to finish. You’ll likely get a lot of enjoyment out of combining the katana with the L-Body and increased jump upgrades, which makes movement and combat feel especially fluid in The Last Salvage Squad.

One minor issue is that you have to choose your weapon before entering the hub room to speak with the other units. Some of them provide useful information about upcoming arenas or enemy types, which may influence the weapon you’d want to bring. It would be much more convenient if weapon selection happened at the mission exit door instead. That said, it’s a small complaint in an otherwise very enjoyable game.
