A Galaxy That Keeps Moving

Across 150 sectors, six factions mine resources, move cargo, run factories, trade goods, fight over territory, and rebuild after battles. The activity isn’t just background decoration. Ships actually travel between locations, cargo gets delivered, and destroyed vessels leave real wrecks behind.

The economy works in much the same way. More than 50 different goods move through a genuine supply chain, with prices changing according to supply and demand. Buy materials where they’re affordable, transport them to places that need them, or take advantage of shortages for a better return.

And there’s plenty of room for trouble. Smuggling and piracy can attract the attention of the law, while faction relationships are affected by the choices made along the way. Reputation sticks around, so actions can have an impact long after a particular job is finished.

Start Small and Build a Fleet

The early game of Starlathe begins with a small ship, leaving plenty of room to decide how to make money. Mining asteroid fields and refining the ore is one option. Trading is another, with cargo routes connecting different parts of the economy. Combat-focused players can hunt pirates on behalf of factions or take the other side and become pirates themselves.

Crafting adds another layer to progression. Resources can be refined into components, which then go into weapons, modules, and complete ships. There are full production chains to work through rather than simply buying everything from a menu.

Fleet management becomes a much bigger part of the experience as the operation grows. Ships can be purchased, assigned specific jobs, and sent out to work independently. Miners can bring in resources, transporters can handle trade routes, and escorts can protect valuable convoys. At the top end, a dreadnought can serve as the flagship of an entire battle group.

Fleet combat is handled on the battlefield rather than through hidden dice rolls. Turrets, rockets, beams, and point-defense systems all play a role as ships fight one another directly.

A Living Galaxy With Real Consequences

The simulation doesn’t simply reset when something important happens. Stations can be destroyed, triggering evacuations and leaving wreckage and loot behind. Factions can later rebuild those locations, while territorial control shifts as conflicts unfold.

That makes the galaxy feel less like a collection of static missions and more like a place where things happen independently. A trade route can change because supplies run low. A sector can become dangerous after a conflict in Starlathe. A station can disappear because of a battle that happened while the player was somewhere else.

There’s also a skill progression tree to work through, along with crafting and a fleet command system. Officers can receive independent orders, giving larger fleets more flexibility without requiring every ship to be controlled manually.

Explore Beyond the Known Map

The galaxy isn’t completely visible from the start. Fog of war hides unexplored areas, encouraging exploration and mapping as Starlathe progresses. Ship graveyards, abandoned sectors, and wild space can be found beyond the familiar routes and gates.

Features of Starlathe:

  • There are 22 different skies to fly beneath, adding some visual variety despite Starlathe’s relatively simple presentation.
  • The overall style is straightforward and reminiscent of games such as Space Impossible, while the larger economic and faction simulation has similarities to the approach seen in X4: Foundations.
  • One limitation is worth noting: ships can’t be designed from scratch with a completely custom exterior. However, once a ship has been acquired, many of its internal components can be changed and customized.
  • The result is a space sim built around a simple idea: the galaxy doesn’t stop just because the player isn’t looking. Mine, trade, fight, craft, manage fleets, explore unknown sectors, and decide where to fit into a constantly changing economy.
