A Fresh Photo-Focused Adventure

Get helpful encounters and plenty of small moments worth capturing. The goal is to track down mysterious natural events known as TOEMs, while meeting new characters and recording the world through the camera.

The basic idea remains easy to enjoy whether the first TOEM has been played or not. There is no pressure to rush through the adventure, and TOEM 2 does a good job of making exploration feel rewarding from the start.

The camera is still the main tool, but it has picked up a few new tricks. Photos can be used to solve puzzles, reveal secrets, and record discoveries, while new attachments give the camera additional uses. These tools come in handy when dealing with different problems across each region.

Explore, Photograph, and Make Friends

Movement has also been expanded. Running, jumping, and climbing open up new ways to explore the cozy environments, with hidden routes, viewpoints, and little details tucked away around the map. Wandering off the obvious path often pays off, especially when something interesting catches the eye.

Along the way, there are plenty of strange characters and cute creatures to meet. Helping them out leads to new friendships, quests, and memories that can be added to the growing collection.

The journal plays an important part in keeping track of everything. Completing tasks, finding discoveries, and cataloguing creatures earns stamps. Those stamps are more than simple collectibles, too, since collecting enough of them is what opens the way to the next region.

TOEM 2 is clearly designed for a relaxed playthrough. There are no time limits and no demanding requirements needed to reach full completion. Sitting on a bench with the music playing, stopping to look at the scenery, or simply wandering around and taking pictures all fit naturally into the experience.

What Works and What Falls Short

The new areas are a pleasure to explore, and the visual improvements give the sequel a fresh look without losing the charm that made the original so appealing. Jumping and the new camera tools also add something different to the familiar formula, so the gameplay does not feel like a simple repeat.

That said, a few things from the first game are noticeably absent. Features such as the cosmic cubes and shiny character portraits do not return, and there are no obvious replacements that fill the same role. The shorter length is another drawback. The original took around eight hours to complete, including roughly 90 minutes spent in its free DLC area, while TOEM 2 took about three and a half hours to finish completely.

That shorter runtime can come as a surprise. Reaching achievements such as the one for completing all climbing challenges can make it feel like there should still be a lot more to do, only for the game to reveal that the final stretch has already arrived.
