Seoul, 1960: A Nation on the Brink

President Syngman Rhee is nearing the end of his rule, while the disputed March 15 election has pushed students into the streets demanding democracy. Prices are climbing, American aid is falling, and public frustration is spreading across the country.

Against this backdrop stands an Army major general stationed at the Busan Logistics Base Command.

The original plan was to overthrow the Rhee government through a military revolution on May 8, 1960. With the date only weeks away in For the Fatherland: Chronicle of Park Chung-hee, however, the April 19 democratic uprising changed everything. The operation had to be abandoned.

The government that followed Rhee did little to restore confidence. The old political establishment struggled to deal with the country’s problems, and before long, the idea of national renewal returned. This time, the objective is to prepare for May 16, 1961.

Getting there is far from simple. Military units must be brought over to the cause, funds have to be secured, counterintelligence must be avoided, and the final move requires reaching the Han River Bridge at three in the morning. Until the uprising succeeds, however, a revolution is nothing more than an act of treason waiting to fail.

Running the Country After the Coup

Success on May 16 does not mark the end of the story. It opens the door to an entirely different challenge: deciding what comes next in For the Fatherland: Chronicle of Park Chung-hee.

The Supreme Council for National Reconstruction puts the new government in charge of settling accounts with the old political order. Whether that produces meaningful reform or simply creates another authoritarian government depends on the decisions made along the way.

The Economic Planning Board puts the country’s financial future front and center. In 1960, Korea is among the world’s poorest nations, so economic growth quickly becomes one of the government’s biggest concerns. Plans are drawn up, targets are set, and results have to be measured against them.

The Ministry of Finance gives another set of difficult choices. More money can be directed toward government plans, but public dissatisfaction may rise as a result. Lowering taxes year after year can ease that pressure while changing how ordinary people live.

Even legislation takes patience. In the National Assembly, a bill moves through several stages, from introduction and standing committees to the legislation committee and final plenary vote. The process can take five to seven months, and the balance of seats won in the general election determines how those votes turn out.

The judiciary works differently in For the Fatherland: Chronicle of Park Chung-hee. Constitutional provisions are shaped by the player’s decisions, and amendments can alter the wording itself. Once an article is rewritten, the public will remember who made that choice.

A History That Can Change

The major moments of the era receive their own events and decision screens. These include the Seoul Operation on May 16, presidential elections, negotiations over claims with Japan, the restoration council, and dinner at Gungjeong-dong.

History is not locked into a single route at For the Fatherland: Chronicle of Park Chung-hee.

Important decisions can lead to different outcomes, creating hundreds or even thousands of possible paths through Korea’s political history. Some may resemble the events familiar from real history, while others explore possibilities that never happened.
