Reading up on Albert Camus adds some interesting context (especially in relation to one particular quote and Crawling Angels’s themes). Speaking of Tontine, the voice actor for Uncle Tontine did a phenomenal job of making him feel tangible and memorable. It really stands out. Back to the story, it’s hard not to worry about the other child protagonists too, given their own hurts and feelings of guilt. The story of Crawling Angels never explicitly spells out what most of them are dealing with, but it seems they’re all carrying some kind of emotional wound. It’s refreshing that this isn’t explained outright, leaving room for players to exercise their critical thinking.

The writing is so well done that it becomes easy to feel invested in everyone’s well-being. Back to guilt—the funniest thing about guilt as an emotion is that some of the worst criminals in human history feel none at all. Isn’t that the biggest irony? Here are children burdened with overwhelming guilt despite being largely innocent, while serial killers, CEOs, and war mongers can feel nothing.
