A Dark Spell Deckbuilder With Plenty of Variety

You take control of a necromancer and head into cursed battlefields packed with undead enemies. Before each mission, a spell deck has to be prepared from the cards already unlocked, making the choice of spells just as important as surviving the fight itself.

There are fourteen cursed levels to work through, and each run earns points that can be spent on booster packs. New packs expand the spell collection and give access to combinations that were not possible before. Runs can be played alone, through local co-op, or online with up to four players at CODEX MORTIS.

The deck can be shaped around different schools of dark magic. A Summoning-focused setup can flood the battlefield with skeletons and bone golems while they absorb enemy attacks. Blood Magic takes a more dangerous route, trading health for increased power. Mixing different schools opens up even more ways to build a character.

Mutating Spells and Ten Schools of Dark Magic

Spells do not always behave the same way. Mutations can alter skills and give familiar abilities completely different effects. A mutated bone spear might travel in a new pattern, while a modified summon can bring another type of undead into the fight. Area spells can also change their coverage, and certain aura effects can gain their own distinct behavior.

There are 200 spells across ten schools of dark magic, with every school capable of being combined with the others.

CODEX MORTIS also features 31 playable heroes. Some specialize in one school, while others combine two or three. Ravena Bloodscythe, for example, combines Blood Magic and Harvest. Seraphon Wraithblade brings together Harvest, Death Knight, and Soul Magic in CODEX MORTIS.

The final six stages make up Apocrypha, which serves as the second chapter of the story campaign. The last four levels can also be played in Survivor mode. At the end of The Road to Blood Bath, the run finishes with a three-phase boss boasting 600,000 HP.

Co-op, Progression, and Endless Build Options

Online play supports parties of up to four people. Games can be hosted through Steam or joined through available sessions. Private lobbies can be protected with a password, while a lobby code can be shared with friends. If someone disconnects or crashes during a run, they can rejoin while the rest of the group continues playing. Local co-op is supported as well.

The progression system gives plenty of room to experiment. Active spells can be mixed between different magic schools, while heroes bring their own abilities into battle at CODEX MORTIS. Artifacts add powerful bonuses, and character progression allows upgrades to damage, cooldowns, health, movement speed, and more.

Booster packs keep expanding the available spell pool in CODEX MORTIS, while procedurally generated worlds make each run different. The result is a setup where familiar spells can keep finding new uses as different heroes, mutations, schools, and artifacts are combined.
