A Fun Idea With a Different Reality

Along the route, players mix drinks and throw them at each other, while getting increasingly drunk makes the driving more difficult. The big question is how far the group can actually get before everything falls apart.

Bar After Bar first caught attention through Instagram, and the relatively low price made it an easy purchase for a couple of friends looking for something silly to play together. The first few minutes were genuinely promising. Driving around felt entertaining, the weapons were interesting enough to mess around with, and there was plenty of room for the kind of stupid moments that can make multiplayer games fun.

The problem only became clear after reaching the first checkpoint.

Where the Competition Falls Apart

At the first checkpoint, progress stops until the other player arrives. At first, this feels like something that might only happen during the tutorial. Surely the actual game would turn into a race afterward, right?

Not quite.

That waiting system is basically part of the whole Bar After Bar. Each section gives players a small area to complete a challenge before reaching the next checkpoint. Once there, the next part remains locked until the other player catches up. While waiting, players can work on making new cocktails, but there is still plenty of downtime.

Even when the next area becomes available, there is often a reason to wait a little longer anyway. If one player is still preparing drinks, moving ahead can mean missing out on the chance to use them.

That creates a strange situation because messing with friends is clearly one of the main ideas behind the game. Throwing things at each other and causing problems can be hilarious. But at the same time, Bar After Bar is technically built around cooperation, since everyone ultimately needs to reach the same destination.

So Bar After Bar encourages players to sabotage each other, only to make them wait for the person they just sabotaged.

More Co-op Than PvP

The original expectation was something closer to a competitive obstacle course. Small challenges could have worked as races, with players competing to reach the finish first or earn the most points. The cocktail system could then have added another layer of strategy: spend time making a drink and risk falling behind, or keep moving and save time?

Instead, the cocktail-making mechanic mostly feels like a funny extra feature inside what is otherwise a cooperative game with some light messing around.

That does not make Bar After Bar a terrible experience. There are still some good laughs to be had, especially with friends who enjoy chaotic obstacle courses and silly multiplayer mechanics. The bigger issue is that the game gives the impression of being much more competitive than it actually is.

There is no real racing system, and there is not much practical reason to sabotage friends beyond getting a laugh out of it. That novelty can wear off fairly quickly, especially when the result of messing with someone is eventually having to stand around and wait for them to catch up.

For anyone looking for a casual multiplayer game where friends can mess around while working through obstacles together, Bar After Bar can still be worth a look. Just do not go in expecting a proper PvP racing experience. The cocktail throwing and sabotage are fun additions, but the core experience is much more cooperative than the marketing might suggest.
