Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection brings three classic adventures from Naughty Dog’s popular Uncharted franchise to the PlayStation 4.

Developed by Bluepoint Games and published by Sony Computer Entertainment, Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection features updated versions of Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune (2007), Uncharted 2: Among Thieves (2009), and Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception (2011). The story follows Nathan Drake, a daring treasure hunter who travels across the globe in search of lost treasures and answers to historical mysteries.

The collection focuses entirely on the single-player campaigns of these three games. Each adventure combines third-person action, platforming, exploration, and puzzle-solving. Players guide Nathan through ancient ruins, overcome dangerous obstacles, take on hostile enemies with a range of firearms, and work through puzzles to uncover hidden secrets. The gameplay of Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection offers a good mix of action and exploration, keeping each adventure interesting as the story unfolds.
Gameplay and Visual Improvements
Bluepoint Games made several changes to bring the original PlayStation 3 titles up to date. Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection now runs at 1080p resolution and 60 frames per second, delivering smoother gameplay and sharper visuals. The soundtrack was also improved to support surround sound systems, adding more depth to the overall experience.
The developers worked to make the controls and gameplay feel more consistent across the trilogy. The aiming assistance and grenade mechanics in Drake’s Fortune were adjusted to better match the later entries, while Drake’s Deception received changes to its camera movement. Button layouts were also standardized, and the aiming mechanics were refined throughout all three games.
Visual enhancements go beyond higher resolution and smoother performance. Bluepoint re-rendered the cutscenes, improved lighting and visual effects, and added more detailed character models and textures. Ambient occlusion and motion blur were also introduced, bringing graphical effects that were missing from the original releases.
The collection includes several extra features, such as friend leaderboards, additional difficulty settings, trophies, and a photo mode. However, the multiplayer modes from Uncharted 2 and Uncharted 3 were left out, making this package a single-player experience from start to finish.
Development and Decisions Behind the Collection
Although Naughty Dog created the original trilogy, Bluepoint Games handled the remastered editions. The studio had already worked with Sony on collections such as God of War Collection and The Ico & Shadow of the Colossus Collection, making it a suitable choice for the project.
Naughty Dog wanted to introduce the Uncharted series to PlayStation 4 players after the success of The Last of Us Remastered in 2014. The original games had been built for the PlayStation 3, and bringing them to newer hardware offered an opportunity to reach a wider audience. According to Naughty Dog, around 80% of PlayStation 4 owners at the time had never played an Uncharted game, highlighting the potential for the collection to attract newcomers.
The development team also considered including Uncharted: Golden Abyss, a spin-off originally created for the PlayStation Vita by Bend Studio. That idea was eventually dropped because the story was considered too far removed from the main trilogy’s overall narrative. Keeping the collection focused on Nathan Drake’s three central adventures made more sense for the project’s direction.

Features of Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection:
- The decision to exclude multiplayer from Uncharted 2 and Uncharted 3 was deliberate.
- Naughty Dog was concerned that bringing those modes to the collection might split the existing PlayStation 3 player base, which was still active at the time. Rather than dividing players between different versions, the developers chose to leave multiplayer behind and concentrate on the remastered single-player campaigns at Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection.
- The result is a collection that lets players experience Nathan Drake’s first three major adventures with updated graphics, smoother performance, refined controls, and a handful of useful extras.
- For newcomers, it provides a convenient way to catch up on the trilogy of Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection, while returning players can revisit the original stories with several technical improvements.
