NINJA MASTER’S, the 1996 arcade fighter is back on Steam, bringing its fast-paced combat and old-school arcade style to a modern audience.

A Classic Fighter Gets a Fresh Steam Release
The original graphics, controls, and overall arcade feel remain intact, so NINJA MASTER’S still plays much like the classic version.

The big draw is its unusual combat system. Characters can switch between armed and unarmed fighting almost instantly, adding another layer to every match. Fights move quickly, hits can do serious damage, and knowing when to change your fighting style can make a big difference.
There are 12 playable warriors in total, including the bosses. The story takes place in Zipangu, a war-torn land that has spent 300 years caught in chaos. Sasuke carries the weight of his destiny, while his friend and rival Kamui follows his own path. Kasumi brings her skills as a kunoichi, Natsume relies on martial arts, and the rest of the cast each brings a distinct fighting style to the roster.
Together, they face the tyrant Nobunaga in a feudal fantasy filled with powerful opponents and plenty of personality.
Online Battles Are Much Better Suited to Modern Players
The Steam version adds full rollback netcode, which makes online matches considerably smoother and more responsive. That is a welcome addition for a fighting game this fast, especially when matches are played against people on the other side of the world.
Online lobbies support up to nine players, and Practice Mode can run while waiting for a match. Hidden characters can also be enabled without much fuss.
For players who enjoy organized competition, Tournament Mode offers three formats: single elimination, double elimination, and round robin. It gives the game a little more flexibility than the original arcade setup and makes it easier to set up longer sessions with friends.
Practice Tools, Gallery, and Extra Content
Practice Mode is one of the more useful additions. It comes with several training options, including adjustable game speed for working on combos. That makes it much easier to learn NINJA MASTER’S’ mechanics and get comfortable before jumping into Time Attack Mode.
There is also a Gallery Mode containing character artwork and rare design materials. Steam achievements add another small reason to keep playing, with each achievement receiving its own icon.
Taken together, these additions make this release feel like the most complete way to play NINJA MASTER’S without changing what made the original arcade version appealing.
A Great Fighter With One Big Arcade-Era Catch
NINJA MASTER’S stands out as one of ADK’s strongest fighters and remains one of the more overlooked games from the Neo Geo library. Code Mystics has done an excellent job with the port, too. It is close to the ideal version, although the arranged soundtrack is notably absent.

Features of NINJA MASTER’S:
- The gameplay still holds up surprisingly well. The action is smooth, the damage output can get ridiculous, and the fighting system has more depth than its age might suggest. The visuals are also impressive for a game from this era.
- There is one thing worth keeping in mind, though. This is still fundamentally an old-school arcade game. The AI can be brutally difficult, even on the lowest setting, so playing alone against the computer can become frustrating pretty quickly. The original arcade machines were designed to take your quarters, after all.
- With friends, local competition, or online opponents, the experience is much more enjoyable.
- For anyone who missed NINJA MASTER’S during its original run in the West, this Steam release is a solid chance to finally see what made this underappreciated fighter worth remembering.
