As the third entry in the Infamous franchise, it continues the series after Infamous 2 (2011) while introducing a new main character and an independent storyline. The game takes place in a fictional version of Seattle, where Delsin Rowe faces off against the Department of Unified Protection (D.U.P.). Along the way, he gains extraordinary abilities, and the decisions made throughout the adventure determine whether he follows a heroic path or embraces his darker side.

Infamous Second Son’s development started taking shape in 2011, when Sucker Punch began talking with Sony about bringing the franchise to a new generation of consoles. The studio also shared its ideas about the hardware improvements it wanted to see in the PlayStation 4.

With a fresh protagonist and a different set of powers, Infamous Second Son was designed as a new beginning for the series. Delsin’s abilities were built around fast movement and fluid combat, making them a natural fit for Infamous Second Son’s open-world setting.

Gameplay and Supernatural Abilities

Infamous Second Son uses a third-person perspective and gives players plenty of freedom to explore its open world. Delsin Rowe can scale tall buildings, move across rooftops, and use his supernatural abilities to get around the city.

As a Conduit, he can absorb and manipulate different types of energy and materials, including smoke, neon, video, and concrete. Each power set offers its own approach to combat and exploration. Smoke can be used to attack enemies, while neon lets Delsin dash rapidly through the environment and climb buildings with impressive speed.

Karma System and City Exploration

One of Infamous Second Son’s defining features is its Karma system, which tracks whether Delsin’s actions lean toward good or evil. Helping civilians, stopping drug-related crimes, and preventing police brutality contribute to positive Karma. Killing innocent people and choosing violence over capturing enemies push him toward negative Karma instead.

Certain story moments also require players to make decisions that affect other characters. For example, Delsin encounters Abigail “Fetch” Walker, a fellow Conduit who hunts drug dealers. Players can encourage her to abandon her violent behavior or push her toward becoming an even more dangerous killer. Choices like these influence later missions and help shape how the story unfolds.

Story: Delsin Rowe’s Fight Against the D.U.P.

The adventure begins in Salmon Bay, Delsin’s hometown, where his brother Reggie catches him defacing a billboard. Their argument comes to an abrupt end when a military truck carrying three imprisoned Conduits crashes on the Akomish reservation. Two prisoners escape, while Delsin pulls the third, Hank, from the wreckage. During the rescue, Delsin accidentally absorbs Hank’s smoke powers, leaving him confused about what has happened and how to control his new abilities.
