Noa hunts down demonic beings hiding in plain sight behind human faces. The city offers two very different experiences: investigate its secrets during the day, then confront what lurks beneath them at night. Amsterdam is thriving on wealth, influence, and ambition, but something far darker is driving the city from within at 1666: Amsterdam. For centuries, supernatural beings known as the Originals have been given time, power, and the freedom to use both however they please. Now, that debt has come due.

Noa Brooklyn was born as the Collector and raised by the Zaindaris for a single purpose she never asked for: reclaiming the power taken by the Originals. During the day, Amsterdam can be explored as a carefully crafted historical setting filled with details to uncover. Once night falls, the city’s darker side begins to show. Every building carries a gablestone, but appearances can be misleading. The Originals have blended into everyday life, hiding among ordinary citizens. Finding them is only the first step. Noa must identify and mark each target before the Esbat arrives.

When the ritual begins, the Originals reveal their real forms beneath the moon, giving Noa the chance to face them and take back what they owe. Noa uses witchcraft and spells passed down through generations of Zaindaris. There is more than one way to deal with each target, so preparation, timing, strategy, and personal choices can all affect how an encounter plays out. Every Esbat feels like a final reckoning.

Noa also has an unusual companion. Aaron has been summoned from 1999 and now experiences the world through the body of a cat. The two can be switched between throughout 1666: Amsterdam, creating two very different styles of play. Noa relies on spells and witchcraft, while Aaron has four paws, a very different perspective, and plenty of personality.

Features of 1666: Amsterdam:

  • Combat starts off fairly simple and easy to read, giving the basic systems room to develop. Randomized upgrades add variety between attempts, while dying permanently removes upgrades, making mistakes matter. Boss encounters can also change noticeably from one attempt to another, which keeps repeated fights from feeling exactly the same.
  • That worldbuilding is a big part of the appeal. There is always another character, piece of history, or detail that makes the setting worth exploring further. 1666: Amsterdam does a good job of creating that feeling of wanting to know what comes next.
  • The game has some strong Assassin’s Creed energy, especially in the way the setting and historical details are used to support the story. The more time spent with 1666: Amsterdam, the more interesting the Zaindaris tribe, their customs, Noa and Aaron, the history of the witch trials, and 17th-century Amsterdam become.
  • 1666: Amsterdam comes from Panache Digital Games, the independent studio founded by Patrice Désilets, the creative director behind Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time and Assassin’s Creed. The studio previously created Ancestors: The Humankind Odyssey.
