Order of the Sinking Star is an ambitious puzzle adventure packed with strange magic, dangerous machines, and mysterious creatures.

A Vast Puzzle Adventure
It’s created by Jonathan Blow, the acclaimed director behind Braid and The Witness. With more than 1,000 handcrafted puzzles to solve, Order of the Sinking Star offers a huge world to explore, a cast of unusual heroes to discover, and plenty of clever mechanics to learn along the way.

The adventure spans four distinct worlds, each with its own rules, characters, challenges, and secrets. What makes the experience especially interesting is how these separate worlds gradually connect. Characters cross paths, puzzle mechanics interact, and familiar challenges take on new forms as the boundaries between worlds begin to disappear. The result is a puzzle game that keeps finding fresh ways to surprise players without forcing them to follow a fixed path.
Explore Four Worlds and Solve Over 1,000 Puzzles
Curiosity and patience go a long way in Order of the Sinking Star. Order of the Sinking Star features dozens of mechanics and hundreds of hours of potential gameplay, with new ideas building on those introduced earlier. Each solved puzzle helps prepare players for more demanding challenges, while unexpected combinations of mechanics keep the experience feeling fresh.
There is no need to rush through the adventure. Players can explore at their own pace, revisit earlier areas, and return to difficult puzzles whenever they feel ready. Each of the four worlds offers something different, from unusual environments and clever contraptions to dangerous encounters and hidden discoveries.
Meet an Unusual Cast of Playable Characters
The story features a varied group of heroes, including a queen, a thief, a warrior, a wizard, and even a talking boat. Every character brings distinct abilities and a personal story to the adventure, adding variety to both the puzzles and the wider narrative.
As these characters meet and their worlds begin to overlap, the gameplay of Order of the Sinking Star grows more complex. Mechanics that once worked independently can combine in unexpected ways, opening up new solutions and challenges. These connections also help reveal the secrets behind the mysterious realm.
The story unfolds through exploration, gameplay, and notes discovered along the way. Rather than explaining everything at once, Order of the Sinking Star lets players piece together clues and gradually understand the forces connecting its characters and worlds. This approach gives the mystery room to develop alongside the puzzles.
Development History and Creative Influences
Work on Order of the Sinking Star began nearly a decade after the release of The Witness, driven by an ambition to push puzzle design beyond its usual boundaries. The goal was to create an exceptionally large and ambitious puzzle game, bringing different design ideas together into one interconnected experience.
The development team describes this approach as a “game design supercollider,” combining concepts from several puzzle designers to build a puzzle world with greater depth and complexity. Four independent games provided the starting point for this creative process.
