Developed by Beenox and published by Activision, the game launched on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch. It reimagines the original Crash Team Racing, released in 1999 for the PlayStation by Naughty Dog and Sony Computer Entertainment, while incorporating content from Crash Nitro Kart (2003), originally developed by Vicarious Visions and published by Universal Interactive.

The updated presentation gives Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled a more polished look and sound without losing the charm of the original. Familiar characters, recognizable tracks, and classic game modes return alongside improved controls, expanded customization, and a refreshed soundtrack. The result is a racing game that feels nostalgic without looking outdated, making it appealing to longtime fans and players discovering the series for the first time.

Tracks, Characters, and Kart Customization

At launch, Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled featured 34 tracks, including 18 from the original Crash Team Racing, 13 from Crash Nitro Kart, and bonus content such as Retro Stadium. The starting roster contained 26 playable characters drawn from both games. Free Grand Prix events later expanded the selection to 56 characters in total.

Customization adds another layer of personality to the racing experience. Players can change their karts with different bodies, paint jobs, wheels, stickers, and character skins in Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled. These items can be unlocked using Wumpa Coins, the in-game currency earned by competing in races. The Pit Stop serves as the shop where players can spend their accumulated coins on new items and cosmetic upgrades.

The remaster was built from the ground up, with its visual direction taking inspiration from Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy. Beenox aimed to preserve the feel of the original game while updating its presentation and refining the controls. Classic characters, tracks, arenas, and modes remain part of the package, while additional customization options give players more ways to personalize their rides. Nitros Oxide, the main villain, is also playable after completing the required Adventure Mode challenges.

Adventure Mode and Other Ways to Play

The main single-player experience is Adventure Mode, a campaign built around a central hub and a map connecting different racing areas of Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled. Its story follows the attempt to stop the alien Nitros Oxide, who threatens to turn Earth into a concrete parking lot and enslave its inhabitants. Progress comes from winning races, completing special challenges, and taking on powerful bosses.

Adventure Mode offers two versions to suit different preferences. Classic Mode stays close to the 1999 original, locking players into their chosen character and providing no difficulty settings. Nitro-Fueled Mode offers greater flexibility, allowing character changes, kart customization, and adjustable difficulty in Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled.

Extra Content From Crash Nitro Kart

One of the biggest additions in Nitro-Fueled is the collection of content adapted from Crash Nitro Kart. All 13 of its tracks were remastered, along with its karts, battle arenas, and game modes. These additions were adjusted to fit the style and feel of the original Crash Team Racing, helping the expanded package feel more consistent.

Not every feature from the 2003 game made the cut, though. Its anti-gravity sections were left out because recreating them would have required considerable development work and could have invited comparisons with the Mario Kart series.
