Story

“Please make me human.”

A sudden and mysterious outbreak of AI across the globe brings the once-utopian city of Tsukumo to ruin.

Hinata spent part of his childhood there and often escaped to a botanical garden whenever he needed somewhere safe. It was in that garden that he met a girl who helped him deal with his painful past. Over time, his feelings for her grew into love, and when the time came for him to leave, he made her a promise: a marriage proposal.

Years later, Hinata returns to Tsukumo during summer vacation. The city is now abandoned, but rumors have spread about a mysterious ghost living in the old botanical garden and taking care of its flowers.

Curious, Hinata visits the garden himself. Instead of finding a ghost, he encounters a humanoid girl who has one wish above everything else: she wants to become human.

She tells him:

“I may not look like much, but I actually have a fiancé. He promised to come here when those flowers bloom.”

The strange part is that she doesn’t recognize the person standing in front of her as the very fiancé she’s been waiting for.

From there, an unforgettable summer begins between a boy who has lost his home and a humanoid girl who dreams of getting married.

Features of COCORO:

Among the four titular heroines from this series of visual novels, Cocoro comes across as the most human. She isn’t limited to one personality trait or a single emotional role. The story lets her show different sides of herself, and watching her change throughout the game is one of its strongest points.
The story will probably draw comparisons to ATRI, and that’s pretty easy to understand. Both games take place in worlds affected by a major disaster and feature a robot girl at the center of the story. The similarities are hard to miss.
That said, COCORO handled the concept better, at least from this perspective. A big reason is how much attention the story gives to the idea of making AI feel genuinely human. Rather than simply telling the audience that Cocoro is becoming more human, the game actually gives enough time to show that change happening.
Cocoro learns, grows, develops new emotions, and gradually becomes more convincing as a person. By the end, she feels more human than the other heroines in this group, including Atri, Ginka, and Kanade. That isn’t meant to suggest that the other characters are poorly written. Cocoro simply gets a stronger focus on this particular aspect of her character.
The amount of development she receives is satisfying, and the story does a good job of showing her progression instead of rushing it. Still, one area that could have been handled better is Hinata’s father. More time with him after the attempted…
