Black is a first-person shooter developed by Criterion Games and published by Electronic Arts (EA) for the PlayStation 2 and Xbox.

Story, Missions, and Gameplay
The game puts players in the boots of Jack Kellar, a US Army special forces soldier questioned about his involvement in a series of missions targeting a dangerous terrorist organization.

What makes Black stand out is its emphasis on explosive action and environmental destruction. Gunfights feel intense, explosions pack a punch, and the cinematic presentation gives the game a distinctly Hollywood-style feel. The sound design also deserves credit, adding weight to every firefight and making the combat more satisfying. While the gameplay follows a familiar shooter formula, its focus on spectacle gives it plenty of personality.
Mission Progression
The story takes place in Ingushetia and Chechnya, two republics within Russia. Its central character, Sergeant First Class Jack Kellar (Marty Papazian), is an undisciplined operative working with a CIA black operations unit. During an interrogation, an unidentified interrogator (Paul Pape) questions him about the Seventh Wave, a terrorist organization involved in arms trafficking, multiple attacks, and numerous killings.
Kellar initially refuses to cooperate. However, the interrogator warns that his classified activities could become public knowledge, leaving him facing a court-martial, a dishonorable discharge, and life imprisonment. With few options left, Kellar agrees to recount his recent missions.
The story then jumps back four days to an assault on a Seventh Wave stronghold in Veblensk. Kellar eliminates three senior members of the organization before ignoring orders and entering a terrorist-controlled building. Inside, a mercenary catches him off guard. The man turns out to be William Lennox, a former CIA operative specializing in covert killings. After faking his death in Cairo, Egypt, Lennox has taken control of the Seventh Wave.
Kellar’s next assignment takes him across the border into Treneska, where he must travel along the Vlodnik Canal and destroy a terrorist base and its weapons supplies. Following a fierce firefight at a farmhouse, he encounters MacCarver (Cree Summer), the leader of black operations Team Bravo. Together, they head toward Nazran to eliminate an arms factory.
Combat and Weapon Selection
Black keeps its core gameplay focused on first-person shooting, with straightforward objectives and plenty of enemies to take down. Rather than introducing complicated mechanics, the game concentrates on gunplay, explosive encounters, and the destruction of the surrounding environment.
Players can carry just two weapons at once, so choosing the right combination matters. Different firearms have their own characteristics, making weapon selection an important part of each mission. Grenades provide another way to deal with groups of enemies or flush opponents out of cover, and they can be thrown without switching away from the currently equipped firearm.

Features of BLACK:
- The campaign is divided into individual missions, with video cutscenes connecting the different stages of the story. Each assignment sends players into hostile territory, where they must fight through enemy positions and complete specific objectives to move forward.
- Higher difficulty settings add extra requirements before a mission can be completed. These optional challenges include finding intelligence documents, collecting blueprints, and destroying particular environmental objects. Completing them requires more attention to the surroundings rather than simply pushing toward the next firefight.
- The game’s HUD helps players identify these interactive targets. When the crosshair passes over a relevant object, its color changes to indicate that it can be examined or destroyed. It’s a simple system, but it makes locating hidden objectives more manageable without removing the challenge.
- Explosives also offer an extra tactical option. Both grenades and land mines can be detonated early by shooting them, allowing players to use the environment to their advantage. These small details complement the game’s larger focus on destruction and help keep firefights engaging.
