A pixel game where you are going to select your champion and explore a city full of enemies to beat them all.
The game is presented in the NES style and basically parodies River City Ransomware, only instead of marching through the streets and pounding the attack buttons, you select short missions with a handful of opponents and then fight and choose battles in real-time, role-playing games that can be paused between combos, finishers or handles and throws.
Described in a few words, Beatdown City is creative and cathartic. It rewards you for doing more than just the barebones of combos, with the ability to chain more moves and take down obnoxious people more effectively. Its retro aesthetic is realized flawlessly, with a kickass chiptune soundtrack to boot.
Treachery in Beatdown City is the most refreshingly unique take on retro-aesthetic beat-em-ups we’ve had the pleasure of playing in quite some time. Both for its gameplay and message. If you enjoyed series like River City or Streets of Rage, or perhaps even old-school RPGs like the original Final Fantasy, then the turn-based combo-creating nature of Beatdown City should prove interesting, and if you’re anything like us, satisfying addition to the format.
