A heartfelt story of ambition, struggle, and friendship told from the perspective of a young boy in fictional 90s rural India.
Explore ancient palace ruins, set up your garden, cook Indian food, run errands for quirky characters, and learn about your history by making art. Foraging is lovely; plants recover quickly enough to feed your needs without becoming so common as to be dull. Names and types of plants are India-specific, and help build the world. Some plants can be used for medicine; others for food; others for building.
And you can grab clay with which to make cooking vessels, as well. Farming is a little clunky, but it works. All the various foods (onions, potatoes, tomatoes, etc.) are priced similarly as seeds and sell for similar amounts once harvested, so there’s no real depth to the system, but the plant animations are quite nice. Hand pumping your farm’s well for water is a drag, but that’s intentional, and it also helps build the world.
The world of The Palace on the Hill doesn’t feel like anywhere I’ve been before in another game. The sense of a poor but charming village atop grand ancient ruins is vivid and artfully conveyed.
