What happens when cosmic horror reaches a colony of penguins? In Penguin Colony, human explorers venture into Antarctica in search of an ancient entity beyond human understanding at Penguin Colony. As rival groups pursue their own agendas, the penguins watch from the sidelines as curiosity turns into terror and the human mind begins to unravel.
Inspired by H.P. Lovecraft’s At the Mountains of Madness and other works, this reimagining brings classic weird fiction to life from an unexpected perspective. The result is an atmospheric adventure that blends eerie storytelling, Antarctic exploration, and the unsettling mystery of forces humanity was never meant to understand.
A Journey Into the Frozen Unknown
The year is 1939. Deep in Antarctica, the Nazis and the Kaitiaki are drawn toward a being that has existed for an unimaginable length of time in Penguin Colony. Their goals couldn’t be more different. One faction wants to harness its extraordinary power for destructive purposes, while the other seeks to put the ancient presence back to sleep for another century, just as its ancestors have done for generations.
Caught in the middle of this strange encounter are the local penguins, whose curiosity leads them closer to the unfolding events. Players can take control of different penguins and roam the frozen landscape, following the human visitors as they uncover disturbing secrets. Watching their discoveries unfold is part of the experience, especially as the explorers struggle to comprehend what they’ve found and gradually lose their grip on reality.
The project is developed by Origame Digital, the studio behind the award-winning Umurangi Generation, and published by Fellow Traveller, known for 1000xRESIST. Narration by Lenval Brown adds another layer to this chilling Antarctic adventure.
Origame Digital is a new media studio based in Ahitereiria, known for exploring the creative possibilities of video games through original storytelling. Its previous release, Umurangi Generation, won the 2020 Independent Games Festival (IGF) Grand Prize.
The studio’s approach combines the interactive nature of games with distinctive narrative ideas, resulting in experiences that stand apart from more conventional releases. Penguin Colony continues that creative direction, offering a different perspective on cosmic horror and a fresh way to revisit the strange, unsettling worlds inspired by H.P. Lovecraft.
