Its world is filled with real-time RPG combat. SpongeBob, Katara, Leonardo, and the rest of the crew trade their usual surroundings for swords, spells, special abilities, and plenty of chaos.

The result is a surprisingly fun mashup that combines familiar Nicktoons personalities with classic fantasy RPG ideas. Heroes swing spatulas, bend water, wield katanas, cast spells, and fight their way through a series of lively worlds. There are big battles, changing environments, puzzles, side quests, and plenty of character moments along the way.

A Nickelodeon Adventure With an RPG Twist

Nicktoons & The Dice of Destiny is essentially a family-friendly, Diablo-style action RPG starring SpongeBob and a huge selection of Nickelodeon favorites. SpongeBob may be the face of Nicktoons & The Dice of Destiny, but Timmy Turner arguably takes the central role since much of the story revolves around him.

The plot is pretty straightforward. Characters from different Nicktoons worlds, along with the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, are suddenly pulled away from their homes. Their goal is to find the Dice of Destiny and restore everything to normal.

There are no major surprises in the story, but that isn’t really where Nicktoons & The Dice of Destiny gets most of its charm. The interactions between the characters are much more entertaining, especially with the original voice actors returning for their roles. Seeing these characters bounce off one another gives the adventure plenty of personality.

The stages also do a good job of mixing the different Nickelodeon universes together. Familiar locations are transformed into fantasy-inspired versions of their original settings. Bikini Bottom becomes a fantasy kingdom, while the Ghost Zone brings in enemies and themes from Danny Phantom. Even the enemies get creative, with SpongeBob-style fish appearing as knights and other recognizable elements receiving the same fantasy treatment.

Combat and Difficulty

The combat is fairly approachable and doesn’t become overly difficult, with three difficulty settings available for each stage. Most of the adventure feels manageable, particularly when the optional content is completed along the way.

A few specific missions, however, can be frustrating for reasons that feel more technical than challenging. Zuko’s teacup mission is a good example. Nicktoons & The Dice of Destiny warns that the cup can only take a certain number of hits before breaking, but status effects can apparently count as individual hits as well. Since many enemies in that section can inflict burn damage, the cup’s health can disappear much faster than expected.

Outside of those moments, the game rarely feels punishing. Completing side quests also helps keep the difficulty under control. The level cap sits at 40, yet it’s easy to end up overleveled in certain parts of the adventure if the optional missions are completed regularly.

Different Heroes, Different Playstyles

Every playable character comes with their own set of abilities, including offensive attacks, defensive skills, and a powerful ultra move. That variety makes experimenting with the roster worthwhile.

Even before the entire lineup becomes available, there are enough differences between the characters to find a playstyle that fits. Some heroes feel better suited to direct combat, while others rely more heavily on abilities and ranged attacks.

Play as Legendary Nickelodeon Characters

SpongeBob SquarePants, Katara, Leonardo, Sandy Cheeks, Timmy Turner, Susie Carmichael, Danny Phantom, Jimmy Neutron, and Jenny Wakeman all get fantasy-inspired makeovers.

Each character takes on the role of a classic RPG archetype, ranging from Spellcasters and Wizards to Barbarians, Knights, and more. Their weapons, abilities, and powers are tailored to their individual personalities, giving each hero a distinct feel.

Fast-Paced Real-Time Combat

Battles take place in real time, with plenty of room for attacks, spells, combos, and defensive moves. Learning how each character fights makes a noticeable difference, especially when dealing with larger groups of enemies or tougher encounters.
