In New Pokémon Snap, the player is a Pokémon photographer, who visits various islands in the Lensis region to assist in the research studies of Professor Mirror and his assistants.

Taking pictures helps the player to build a compendium called Fotodex; the title features more than 200 different Pokémon for the user to portray. In addition to adding images to the Fotodex, the player also helps investigate the Lumini phenomenon, which causes Pokémon and plants to take on a special glow.
For each research expedition, the user travels in a hovercraft on rails, the Neo-One, to safely photograph Pokémon in their natural environments. These habitats include forests, deserts, and beaches, which can be visited during the day or night to examine different types of Pokémon.

Each photo takes by the player is qualified by Professor mirror on a scale of one to four stars, taking into account aspects such as the composition of the shot, the closeness of the Pokémon and you are facing the camera or not. Players can choose to save those photos to the Fotodex, which can contain up to four images of each Pokémon (one in each ranking). As users take higher-quality photos, they earn Expedition Points, which serve to improve the level of investigation for each area in the region. Higher research levels will open more levels to explore in that area.
