Kingdom Hearts Final Mix is an extended edition and expanded in content, levels, elements, characters and scenes of the original Kingdom Hearts game . Its release occurred only in Japan, so thanks to the compilation title its exclusive content will be available for the first time in Europe and North America.

Its story marks the beginning of the main plot of the saga (the non-extended edition was the first video game). Sora, Riku, and Kairi live happily in the Fate Islands, playing and fantasizing about the existence of other worlds. One night a strange storm breaks out, and Sora witnesses his friend Riku being swallowed up by darkness, and Kairi disappears into his arms as strange and black creatures, Heartless, begin to emerge from everywhere. Darkness engulfs the island and when Sora wakes up, he finds himself in a place he’s never seen before and sets out on a search for his friends. At the same time, at Disney Castle, Donald discovers that King Mickey has disappeared leaving a letter behind him, giving orders to him and Goofy to find “the Key”. Unbeknownst to any of the three, their paths would soon cross.
