Dodge rivals and beat the clock – distance matters more than position. Super Night Riders is a modern checkpoint arcade racer series inspired by ’80s classics. Miyu. The Night Riders series has always had an excellent ‘feel’ to its gameplay. With Super Night Riders S1, players must now contend with a ‘boost’ function. This addition to the formula slightly changes the racing calculus, and it has so far been an amusing twist.
Nevertheless, the ‘core’ of Night Riders remains: the onslaught of all the tiny snap decisions one must continually make: slow down and take the inside, or drift past and try to take the outside line? Keep on the boost and jam deep into that turn, or lay off of it to prepare for the next bend? They say there’s no second chance for a first impression. Good thing Super Night Riders S1 made a very good one! Gameplay-wise, there’s not much to say. The feel is incredible, especially if you can stay on top of it. While there are only a few bikes to pick from, they handle well.
The controls are fairly simple and very responsive. Haven’t run into bugs or problems, not counting a few occasional framerate hic-ups in the desert template. Visually, Super Night Riders S1 is definitely not extraordinary, but given that you’re zipping at 200+ km/h, it’s hardly noticeable. They’re doing the job just fine. Stages could use a little more variety and more consistent environments.
The gameplay of Super Night Riders S1turns out, reversing this and using the deactivation as a soft brake to make corners, enhances the gameplay as it basically feels like either using some brake on your bike or full-on braking for emergencies. And in riding, that’s what you usually do: there is the keep straight and feel the edge of grip kind of breaking, and then there’s the braking that you use while cornering to stabilize and control. So it adds a good dimension to the gameplay.
